What are the symptoms of a bad alternator? When an alternator is getting ready to go bad there are many symptoms that may happen with a vehicle. The vehicle may have problems starting or stalling. The lights may be dim or too bright, also you may have a dead battery. The accessories in the vehicle may tend to be slow or malfunctioning. A battery warning light may come on in the dash. A growling or whining noise may occur and a smell of burning rubber or wires may appear. If the alternator does go out, the vehicle will fail to run.
